Nigerian Passport Renewal in the UK: London Appointment and Document Guide

A step-by-step Nigerian passport renewal guide for UK residents: online application, London appointment, documents, lost passports and collection checks.

In plain English

Renewal is not completed by emailing a passport photo to an agent. Your application category matters: ordinary reissue, change of data, damaged booklet and lost passport do not use identical evidence or charges.

This checklist is a planning aid. The High Commission’s current appointment notice controls.

How the UK renewal process works

  1. Choose the correct passport application or reissue category on the official NIS channel.
  2. Complete the form exactly as your identity records support.
  3. Pay through the official route and save the receipt.
  4. Book the appointment route linked by the Nigeria High Commission.
  5. Attend with the original booklet and every category-specific document.
  6. Keep your acknowledgement and track only through official channels.

Do not book travel around an estimated completion date until your new passport is physically available.

Documents to prepare

The High Commission’s published passport notices commonly request the application form, payment receipt, appointment slip and old passport booklet for a reissue. A lost, damaged or data-change case may require extra evidence and a different administrative payment.

Names, birth dates and places of birth should be checked before submission. A mismatch across NIN, birth evidence and old passport can slow a case because the officer must establish which record is correct.

London appointments and passport interventions

The main immigration service is associated with Nigeria House in London, but the High Commission may announce temporary intervention exercises in other UK cities. Such events have their own dates, addresses, booking link and document instructions.

Use only a notice published on the official High Commission website. A forwarded social post is not enough evidence that an event or payment account is genuine.

Lost, damaged or urgent passports

A lost passport is a replacement case, not a routine renewal. Prepare the police or loss evidence and any extra declaration the official checklist requests. A damaged booklet should not be used for travel simply because the biodata page remains readable.

If travel is genuinely urgent, ask the High Commission whether an Emergency Travel Certificate fits the journey. An ETC is not the same as a new passport and may have limited use.

Name and date-of-birth corrections

A renewal reproduces existing details; it is not automatically a correction process. If your current passport has a spelling, name or birth-date issue, choose the relevant change-of-data route and prepare the supporting civil and identity records. Do not submit a routine reissue and expect the enrolment officer to change a record informally.

Check the order of names across your NIN, previous passport, birth evidence and marriage or deed-poll documents. Where records disagree, resolve the underlying identity issue early rather than discovering it at the appointment.

A sensible timeline for UK residents

Start months before expiry if the passport is needed for travel, employment checks or an immigration application. Appointment availability, document review, booklet production and delivery are separate stages. Published service targets are useful, but they are not a guarantee for every case.

After enrolment, keep the acknowledgement safely and monitor only the official tracker or communication channel. If a delay affects another UK process, retain evidence that renewal is in progress and ask the relevant UK authority what alternative proof it accepts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I renew a Nigerian passport in the UK?

Yes. UK residents can use the official NIS and Nigeria High Commission London process.

Do I need my old Nigerian passport?

For an ordinary reissue, the High Commission lists the old booklet as a required item. Lost-passport cases use a separate evidence route.

Can an agent book my appointment?

Use the official booking route yourself and do not share passwords or identity documents with an unverified agent.

Can I renew in Manchester or another UK city?

Only when the High Commission announces an approved intervention or service for that city. Check current official notices.

Should I buy a flight before the new passport arrives?

It is safer not to rely on an estimated completion date for non-refundable travel.
