How Nigerian postcodes work

NIPOST’s national addressing guidance defines a six-digit postcode. The first three digits form a dispatch component and the last three identify the delivery component. That is why nearby districts can have different codes even when both are described as Lagos or Abuja.

Forms may use “ZIP code” because the software was designed for the United States. For a Nigerian address, enter the correct NIPOST postcode when the form accepts six digits.

How to find the correct code

1. Write the full state, local government, town and street.
2. Open the official NIPOST postcode finder.
3. Search to the smallest available delivery area.
4. Compare the result with a recent utility bill or courier record.
5. Ask the recipient to confirm when sending a valuable parcel.

Do not select the first code attached to a broad city name if the exact district is available.

Postcode, ZIP code and phone code

A postcode helps sort physical mail. A ZIP code is the United States term that many international forms use as a generic label. A phone country code routes calls: Nigeria’s is +234. These identifiers are not interchangeable.

The commonly repeated 23401 looks like the phone code with digits added; it is not a universal national postcode.

Writing a deliverable Nigerian address

Put the recipient’s name first, followed by house number and street, district or town, local government or city, state, six-digit postcode and NIGERIA for international mail. Add a reachable phone number where the courier permits it.

Landmarks can help a rider but should not replace the structured address.

Postcodes on international online forms

When a foreign checkout asks for “ZIP,” it often means the destination country’s postal code. Select Nigeria first, then enter the correct six-digit NIPOST code. If the form rejects six digits, the merchant may not support Nigerian addresses correctly; do not invent a US-style code simply to pass validation.

For identity or banking forms, use the postcode attached to the address evidence you are submitting. A mismatch does not always mean fraud, but it can trigger a manual check when the institution compares location fields.

Businesses collecting Nigerian addresses

Use separate fields for building and street, district, city or LGA, state and postcode. A single free-text box produces addresses that are hard to validate and route. Let customers add a landmark and phone number, but do not label +234 as a postcode.

For valuable shipments, confirm the address with the customer and use a trackable service. A correct postcode improves sorting; it does not guarantee door delivery where the courier requires collection or additional directions.
