Which Nigerian mission should you use?

The embassy in Washington represents Nigeria diplomatically and provides consular services. The consulates general in New York and Atlanta also handle listed citizen and passport services. A mission can organise services by jurisdiction or by appointment capacity, so do not assume any office will accept any application.

How passport renewal from the USA works

1. Select the correct reissue or passport category through the official Nigeria Immigration Service process.
2. Enter identity details exactly and select the intended US processing mission.
3. Pay only through the approved application route.
4. Follow that mission's biometric appointment or approved contactless instructions.
5. Prepare the old booklet, application, receipt and category-specific evidence.

A lost, damaged or change-of-data case is not an ordinary renewal and may require additional evidence.

Contactless renewal versus biometric appointment

Contactless biometric renewal may be available to an eligible applicant through the NIS system. Eligibility, document-mailing instructions and fees should be checked on the current mission notice. Do not mail originals until the official workflow explicitly tells you to do so.

First-time applications, children, identity changes and unreadable biometrics may still require in-person handling. Let the official system determine the route.

Avoiding appointment and payment scams

Use a mission domain reached independently, not a link from an unsolicited WhatsApp message. A genuine appointment does not require sharing your NIS password, one-time code or card PIN with an agent.

Save the application receipt, appointment confirmation, postal tracking and passport acknowledgement. If instructions conflict, ask the mission through the contact details published on its own website.

What to do when renewal is delayed

Check the official tracker first, then contact the selected mission with the application ID and appointment or mailing date. Do not publish your passport number on social media while asking for help.

Keep evidence of a pending renewal for employers or immigration authorities, but ask those organisations what temporary proof they accept. Avoid booking non-refundable travel around an estimated delivery date.

Preparing, mailing and checking the passport

Print the application, payment receipt and appointment confirmation even when copies are stored on a phone. Put the old passport and any civil documents in a labelled folder, and carry originals plus the copies requested by the mission. For a child, confirm parental attendance, consent and birth-evidence requirements. For a name or data change, bring the legal records that connect the old and requested identities.

If an official contactless process requires mailing a passport, use the exact address and return-envelope format published for the selected mission. Record tracking numbers and photograph the contents before sealing the package. When the processed passport arrives, check name spelling, date of birth, sex, place of birth, passport number and expiry date immediately.
