A tourist, family visitor, business attendee and worker do not use the same permission. Select the class that describes what you will actually do in Nigeria; a short-stay visa does not authorise employment.

Start with your reason for travel
Does a US citizen need a visa for Nigeria?
A US passport does not by itself provide visa-free entry to Nigeria. Travellers should obtain the visa or entry permission that matches nationality and purpose before travel. Rules may differ for a person who is Nigerian by birth but now travels on a US passport.
Start at the Nigeria Immigration Service visa-class page. Avoid third-party sites that imply they are the government portal.
Tourism and family-visit documents
NIS lists a valid passport, photograph, return ticket, accommodation and evidence of funds among tourism requirements. A social visit normally adds an invitation from the host and evidence of the host's Nigerian identity or residence status.
Names, dates and addresses should agree across the passport, form, invitation and bookings. Minors may need a birth certificate and parental consent evidence.
Business visit is not permission to work
Short business activity can include meetings, conferences, negotiations or trade events. The host company may need to provide an invitation and CAC documentation. Taking Nigerian employment or carrying out longer technical work requires a different route.
Describe the activity accurately. A vague invitation that conflicts with the itinerary can cause questions during review or at entry.
Application and arrival sequence
- Choose the NIS class.
- Complete the official application with passport details.
- Upload class-specific evidence and pay through the portal.
- Wait for approval before travelling.
- Print or save the QR-coded certificate offline.
- Complete the required landing card and carry supporting documents.
Common reasons for trouble
Frequent problems include an expiring passport, weak or inconsistent accommodation evidence, an invitation that does not accept responsibility where required, unclear proof of funds and applying under the wrong purpose.
An airline can refuse boarding when required approval cannot be shown. A visa also does not remove the border officer's authority to examine entry eligibility.
A worked family-visit scenario
A US citizen staying with an aunt in Lagos should not submit a hotel-only story if the real plan is a family visit. The application should use the appropriate visiting route, identify the host and include the invitation and host identity evidence required by that class. The return itinerary and funds evidence should support the stated dates.
Check passport validity, visa-class eligibility and document readiness before committing to a restrictive fare. A published processing target does not guarantee approval. After approval, compare the name, passport number, validity window, number of entries and permitted stay with the trip, and ask NIS about any error before departure.
