36 States and Capitals in Nigeria: Searchable List, FCT and Six Zones

How many states are in Nigeria?

Nigeria has 36 states. The Federal Capital Territory is a separate federal territory and contains Abuja, the national capital. Casual lists sometimes say “37 states” by counting the FCT, but that is constitutionally imprecise.

Each state has its own capital, governor and House of Assembly within Nigeria's federal system.

Nigeria's six geopolitical zones

The six commonly used geopolitical zones are North Central, North East, North West, South East, South South and South West. They group states for political analysis and administration but are not another constitutional tier of government.

The FCT is usually grouped with North Central for geopolitical discussion.

State capital versus biggest city

A capital houses the main state institutions, but population and commercial importance can sit elsewhere. Ikeja is Lagos State's capital while the broader Lagos metropolis contains several major centres. Asaba is Delta State's capital, while Warri is a major commercial city.

Use the official capital for forms and school questions, not the city you hear about most often.

How states were created

Nigeria did not begin independence with 36 states. The federation moved from regions to 12 states in 1967, then through later creation exercises to the present 36-state structure in 1996.

This history explains why older documents and biographies may name a different state for the same hometown.

Using the list correctly

For an address, state and city are separate fields. Abuja addresses normally use FCT rather than inventing “Abuja State.” For school revision, practise in both directions: state to capital and capital to state.

Spellings matter: Birnin Kebbi, Ado-Ekiti and Port Harcourt are common places where abbreviated lists introduce errors.

The FCT and a better way to learn the list

Lagos served as Nigeria's federal capital before Abuja officially became the capital in 1991. Today Lagos remains a major economic centre, while Abuja hosts federal institutions and diplomatic missions. This is separate from Lagos State's own capital, Ikeja. An address should distinguish Abuja, FCT from Lagos, Lagos State; “Abuja State” is incorrect.

To learn the capitals, group states by geopolitical zone and connect each with a map. Practise confusing pairs such as Niger–Minna, Nasarawa–Lafia, Kebbi–Birnin Kebbi and Jigawa–Dutse. Review in both directions. Add current governors only from dated sources because leaders change while the state-capital list is much more stable.
